As an organization that serves many non-profits and associations, Fox Associates is naturally engaged in what they do. But on an even more fundamental level, we’re fascinated at the ways in which these organizations represent and advocate for the industries they serve. If the infinite niches and ingenuity of the American economy itself—the whole process of developing and bringing a product to market—is inherently interesting, then that extends to the associations that form to serve those industries and profession.
At a recent conference we had a chance to meet some of the team from the Association for Materials Protection and Performance, a global community of professionals dedicated to materials protection through the advancement of corrosion control and protective coatings. At the conference, we caught up with Diane Gross, AMPP’s senior manager for sales, media and exhibits/sponsorships, who kindly agreed to a brief interview for Fox Tales. The following conversation is with AMPP senior manager for public relations Jennifer Kramer.
Fox Tales: AMPP is the product of a 2021 merger between the National Association for Corrosion Engineers (NACE International) and The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC). What was the impetus for the merger? Was there a strategic opportunity or industry need?

Jennifer Kramer.
Jennifer Kramer: The merger between NACE and SSPC was about more than just combining organizations—it was about creating a unified voice for the industry. By merging, we responded to the growing demand for integrated corrosion control and protective coatings solutions. Together, as the Association for Materials Protection and Performance, we’re better equipped to address critical challenges like protecting infrastructure, ensuring sustainability, and safeguarding national security.
Fox Tales: How important is the role of standards creation in your association’s mission?
Kramer: Standards creation is at the very heart of our mission at AMPP. They provide a foundation for consistency, quality, and innovation across industries, ensuring that assets are protected, lives are safeguarded, and businesses operate more efficiently. Our standards bridge cutting-edge research and real-world application. They help industries address critical challenges like corrosion, sustainability, and safety, from infrastructure to defense. Without robust standards, achieving the reliability and performance expected today would be impossible.
Fox Tales: It looks like you have a robust array of events. I’d think events and certification programs dovetail nicely. Is that the case?
Kramer: Our events and certification programs are closely connected and mutually reinforced. Our events provide professionals with opportunities to network, learn, and stay updated on the latest industry trends, while our certification programs allow them to demonstrate their expertise and advance their careers. For example, many of our events offer hands-on workshops and technical sessions that align directly with our certification pathways, giving attendees both practical knowledge and a clear roadmap to achieving recognized credentials. Together, they create a comprehensive professional-development ecosystem that benefits individuals and the industries they serve.
Fox Tales: Similarly, your media offerings are also fairly extensive. What’s your flagship product or products, and does it serve the vital role of membership development?
Kramer: Our media offerings are a cornerstone of connecting with members and advancing the industry. One of our flagship products is Materials Performance, a leading publication that delivers critical insights into corrosion control and protective coatings. It’s not just a resource—it’s a vital tool for professionals to stay ahead in their field. This, along with our growing digital content and on-demand learning platforms, plays a key role in membership development by showcasing the value of being part of a global community dedicated to protecting assets and infrastructure. It provides knowledge, innovation, and connections that professionals can’t find anywhere else.
Fox Tales: Fox Associates is one of the best established (if not the most established outsource sales/revenue firm in the country). What kind of a role do organizations like Fox play in the industry?
Kramer: Independent media-rep firms play a vital role in the industry by helping organizations like ours navigate an increasingly complex media landscape. Their expertise in crafting targeted media strategies ensures the right audiences are reached through the most effective channels—print, digital, or alternative platforms. By leveraging their market knowledge and sales capabilities, these firms help maximize revenue opportunities and extend the reach of media offerings. They’re invaluable partners for organizations looking to grow their impact while staying focused on their core mission.
