Paws for Thoughts this month is going to take a different approach. It’s a more personal approach. But I think it’s important, not just for leaders, and not just our business here at Fox Associates. It’s important at your businesses too—and for all of our readers and beyond, to the entire work world.
Be human. Let your people see that side of you. Let your customers see it. Let them share personal concerns, or individual dilemmas they might be struggling with. There are limits, of course. I trust you all know where they are.
But if you want engaged, motivated, successful people in your company, it’s okay not to always be an automaton. This goes for leaders, like me, and extends to the whole workforce.

Marlys Fox.
With these principles in mind, here’s what I’m feeling right now.
This strong, confident CEO of an important company in our industry—one who has a killer-instinct as a salesperson, one known among the younger crowd of women as tough and resolute, is just now feeling a sense of nostalgia.
This is, admittedly, a “needy” side of myself and it’s unusual. I’m not sure what’s bringing this on. But I’m thinking other women (and men as well) may be experiencing something similar, and so I just want to put this out there: What I really want just now is to be hugged!
I’m missing my late husband, no doubt about that!
Is this covered in HR anywhere/everywhere? Can it possibly be misinterpreted? Is it forbidden?
I see no reason why we can’t give each other this assurance of “shelter from the storm,” a show of appreciation for a good job, a fine presentation, a few business favors granted, a sealed deal.
If you’re tentative about this, try it. I’m guessing you’ll be wonderfully surprised!
From me, for now: Here’s a virtual big hug!
