Paws for Thoughts: Marlys Recounts A Valuable Conversation With A Cabbie

With all that’s going on right now in the world, in the country, and in the industry, it’s difficult for me to come up with some inspirational thoughts, so how about just a little attempt at sharing a humorous experience.

Scene (recently): I call a taxi to pick me up at my office, delivery to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.

Cab arrives: I jump in the back seat and affirm the airport.

Then, because things are so hectic right now, I jumped on my phone and did some business.

Note that I almost always talk somewhat incessantly to my drivers. I love talking about their countries and the likelihood that I had visited there.

Marlys Fox.

But this time, I was too busy.

When I finally realized as we were getting close to O’Hare, It occurred to me that I hadn’t told him which airline I was taking, which would tell him which terminal to drop me off at. Then I leaned forward, put my hand on his shoulder, and said simply: American.

He turned almost full face to me, looked me right in the eye, kind of nodded his head at me, and said: “Pakistani!”

I laughed; he laughed; and then we talked like mad until we reached the terminal, including the fact that I had been to Pakistan somewhat recently and could remember a lot of details about cities and mountains and food and a little bit of everything. We both loved the reminiscing.

Wow, I love to travel. For business and for adventure. And I love just about 99% of all the people I meet along the way.

It’s important to realize that we have way, way more in common with every one of our fellow “man” than to listen to those who try to tell us differently.
